Every housewife (that I know of) seems to have a signature appetizer dish.  For me, it’s rapidly becoming cream cheese and pepper jelly.  Yes, for those of you not “in the know,” that’s an actual thing.  You take a block of cream cheese and put it on a dish.  You scoop pepper jelly on top of it.  You serve it with a small knife or spreader to spread the mixture on crackers.  It’s the easiest, fastest appetizer I know how to make.

Cream Cheese and Pepper Jelly

1 (8 ounce) block cream cheese

1/4-1/2 cup pepper jelly

crackers or small toasts

Place block on serving dish.  Scoop pepper jelly on top of cream cheese.  Serve with a spreader to spread on crackers.

My mom, on the other hand, gets a bit fancy.  She makes an appetizer to put on toothpicks.  This appetizer is best served at snacky type eating events, such as tree trimmings, gift openings, Christmas Eve, and New Year’s Eve.  She makes BBQ sausages.  Sometimes she use the slow cooker; sometimes she uses the stove top.  Either way, they are delicious.  They can be made with “lil’ smokies” sausages or smoked sausage sliced into “coins.”  The recipe requires three ingredients–four if you count the toothpicks.  And, in our family, the toothpicks are a must.

BBQ Sausages

1 package “lil’ smokies” sausages or 1 package smoked sausage, sliced fairly thinly into coins

1 bottle (in the 18 ounce range) BBQ sauce (any flavor or brand)

1 (10 ounce) can diced tomatoes and green chilies (Rotel)


In the crock of a slow cooker (or a medium saucepan), combine the BBQ sauce and Rotel.  Stir in the sausage to coat.  Cook on low (heat) until warmed through.  Serve with toothpicks.

I combined both on one recipe sheet for the binder for easy reference.
