25 Days of Holiday Goodies Day 3: Apple Cider

25 Days of Christmas Goodies Button

No…you didn’t accidentally check out Tuesday’s entry again.  For Halloween, we tried out a great warm treat, apple cider.  I tweaked several recipes until I had what eventually came out below:

It looked even better than that cauldron and tasted fabulous!  The cinnamon flavor really played through…and the brew really made the house smell like autumn.

While cider is traditionally an autumn treat, just as with the sparkling cider yesterday, I believe we could definitely make this a Christmas Eve beverage and a Christmas Day beverage.  It would also be great for trimming the tree and in travel mugs to sip while riding around to look at Christmas lights.

Don’t worry if the apples cook down to almost nothing…that really makes the cider more cider-y (especially if you use apple juice).

Apple Cider

1 gallon apple juice or apple cider

1 1/2 cups orange juice

1/2 cup brown sugar

6 cinnamon sticks

12 whole cloves

12 whole allspice

1 orange, sliced

1 lemon, sliced

1 apple, cored and sliced

Combine first three ingredients in a large pot.  Add remaining ingredients.  Bring to a boil.  Reduce heat to low and leave on the stove.  This can be started at the beginning of the day and sipped on in the afternoon and evening.  It has the bonus effect of making the house smell fabulous, as well!

Be sure to check out the lovely printable below to add to your recipe binder collection!

Muffin really liked the cider, but he had to wait for it to cool down.  One of his “picky” eating habits is that he prefers things cold…or at least lukewarm.
